Tampa II Defense

I am getting a little tired of people saying that Tony Dungy's Tampa II Defense sucks. There are other teams in the league that run it. Lovie Smith of Chicago is was the linebacker coach in Chicago and helped develop it and uses it in Chicago. The defense can leave you susceptible to run because it does require top-notch tackles and at least one good linebacker. Chicago has Urlacher and a couple of good tackles so they are not that easy to run on. The beauty of the Tampa II is that even if you give up the run to some degree, teams can't pass they are screwed.

The Colts are still a middle of the pack defense even with all of their injuries because they can stop the pass. The pass is where the most yardage is typically given up. Second, teams will have to pass if the Colts have a lead which just makes the situation worse on an opposing team. The only concern with the Colts is not that they become run-stopper extraordinaries, but how will they stop people from scoring in goal-line situations.
