Tales From the Gym 1

I have said it before, but I mean it this time. Squatting is such a waste of time for me that I am just not going to do it anymore. I think that squatting well is more about torso, femur, and tibia length than strength.

Tampa II Defense

I am getting a little tired of people saying that Tony Dungy's Tampa II Defense sucks. There are other teams in the league that run it. Lovie Smith of Chicago is was the linebacker coach in Chicago and helped develop it and uses it in Chicago. The defense can leave you susceptible to run because it does require top-notch tackles and at least one good linebacker. Chicago has Urlacher and a couple of good tackles so they are not that easy to run on. The beauty of the Tampa II is that even if you give up the run to some degree, teams can't pass they are screwed.

The Colts are still a middle of the pack defense even with all of their injuries because they can stop the pass. The pass is where the most yardage is typically given up. Second, teams will have to pass if the Colts have a lead which just makes the situation worse on an opposing team. The only concern with the Colts is not that they become run-stopper extraordinaries, but how will they stop people from scoring in goal-line situations.

Carmelo Anthony Suspension

I am not shocked that he got suspended over the fight, but I was surprised to learn that players don't get payed when they get suspended. He is losing $640,000.00. Granted it may not be much of his salary, but that is a hell of a lot of money. If it were me I wouldn't care how much I make or have made, I would not want to just throw a half of amillion dollars down the drain.

I do not profess to be a powerlifter, but I follow the sport to some degree. Anyway this video is an interesting introduction to the sport.

Bodybuilding/Weightlifting Supplements

I am going to post this in my links, but I just thought that I would say something about it. is the best supplement site on the web. I cant think of anyplace that is cheaper. For example, sixty 6-OXO capsules cost around $50 at GNC you can get them at for about $30. I got a bottle of 180 capsules for $80.

Colleges Have Crappy Gyms

Since people don't like reading a bunch I am going to keep it short.
Colleges gyms suck because:

-They have incorrect safety rules that make no sense (i.e. it is not always safer to use "safety clips.")
-They have staff who don't understand weightlifting. I asked a gym staff member to give me a spot one time and he said, "What's that?" And, you definitely don't want to ask most college gym staff how to workout.
-They never have the correct equipment, or won't let you access the equipment that you need so that you can train the way that you would like. You usually can't use the studios, there is no boxing equipment, neck equipment, or deadlift jack.

Fight Science

I don't agree with everything in here, but it is nonetheless interesting. There are some problems with the show. For instance Kung Fu is touted as being weaker than Tae Kwon Do; however, the Kung Fu man is much smaller. Let's face it they are both equally weak. What I find telling is that the the boxer who is less fit than the other fighters has the hardest punch.

Finally, not to go into every detail, but I have to say something about Ninjitsu. While I agree with the general point that some parts of the body are weaker than others, there is no mystery to pressure points. I would suspect that any tough-guy or athlete could name at least one or two. These weak spots require tremendous force from a strike, timing, appropriate technique, and fitness. I have never known of a ninja who possessed all the necessary elements. Case in point, the ninja in this program strikes the solar-plexus but picks the worst strike to do so a horizontal hammerfist.
